Tips for WebMoney Keeper Classic users
- Please, implement the recommendations given above.
- Install the new WebMoney Keeper software, WebMoney Keeper 2.3.0.1 or later version.
- Have removable media ready (a diskette, flash card, smart card).
- During registration, select removable media as the secure key file storage. (The purses file can be kept on the hard drive, since it cannot be accessed without the secure keys.)
- The removable media should be mounted in the device only when starting WM Keeper Classic and connecting to the certification server. Once the Keeper is online, the media should be ejected.
| Make sure
to make a backup copy of the secret key file on some alternate removable media and assure physical security of the media by storing it in a safe place. You should back up the secret key file every time the key or password is changed. |
|
-
If your key is saved in a file with filename and extension indicating the source, for example, webmoneykeys.kwm, you should rename it to something not so striking, for instance, "readme.txt".
You can use any extension you like, your WebMoney Keeper software will detect that your keys are stored in this file. But make sure to remember that this file contains the keys for a particular WM-ID.
You can increase the key file size. If you are using dial-up connection, we advise you to increase the key file size up to 10 Mb. If you are using high-speed Internet connection you can increase the key file size up to 100 Mb.
You can make necessary changes in the "Security" tab Options|WM Keeper|Security"
- Enable all security options (they are enabled by default in WebMoney Keeper 2.3.0.0 and later versions). You can activate the security settings in the "Security" tab Main menu |Options |WM Keeper| Security :
- "Use the activation code of the WebMoney Keeper on entering the system"
If this option is active, then you will need to enter the activation code on first launching your WM-ID from your computer. The activation code is sent to you via e-mail after you finish the registration process (to verified users it is sent to the email provided in WM passports given by the Verification Center).
You will not be able to work with your purses if you do not enter the activation code into the system. The program will prompt you with a request to enter the activation code at first launching your WM-ID from a new computer. If you receive an email with the activation code, but you are using your WM-ID from your old computer, it may mean that somebody else has launched your WM-ID from a different PC. Please, check the connections log in order to understand whether someone has obtained unauthorized access to your private information such as key file and password and as a result your WM-ID;
- "Confirm transactions"
Each time you perform a transaction, the system will prompt you with a request for confirmation. Financial transactions are too important to let mistakes happen. This option will decrease the possibility of mistakes and prevent your purses from different harmful programs emulating human activity. You will be prompted to enter a special number to confirm each transaction.
-
You should periodically view the identification server connections log and check IP addresses. If the table shows the IP addresses you are not using, then it is a very likely proof that someone has obtained unauthorized access to your private information such as key file and password. If you use your WM Keeper only at home or in the office, make sure to enable the IP blocking. By enabling this option you may limit the IP addresses that will be allowed to access the system, and deny access to any others.
If the IP blocking is enabled, and an attempt to access your WMID from an IP-address that is not included into the allowed IP listing is made, the access will be denied and a special code required to unblock your WMID will be emailed to you. If the IP address in the email is not known to you it means that someone has obtained unauthorized access to your WMID. Make sure to provide for unblocking an email different from the one you provided in your registration details.
- It is much safer to keep your key file on a smart card. You can use a number of smart card reader devices to work with WebMoney Keeper. For example:
